Chattanooga Police Sued for Mistreatment Requiring Surgery

by Monty Yolles on January 10, 2013

Greg Luther is suing the Chattanooga, Tennessee police department for damages related to medical expenses he says were incurred during his mistreatment by local police.

Mr. Luther claimed in court documents he was trying to photograph the results of a car crash that caused damage to his fence and retaining wall.  Officer Brian Blumenberg told Luther he could not photograph the damage because it was part of a crime scene. When Luther asked to speak to a supervisor, Blumenberg threw him to the ground, handcuffed him and put him in the back of a police car, according to Luther’s complaint.

Greg Luther sustained a rotator cuff injury that required surgical repair. He is asking the court for $400,000 in damages. The police department’s internal affairs division did not find that Blumenberg used excessive force.
