Take Care to Avoid a Home Fires Caused by Space Heaters

by Monty Yolles on January 11, 2013

More than half of all home heating fires occur in December and January. According to a study by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), space heaters account for 32 percent of those fires. Even more concerning is that 79 percent of home fire deaths are attributed to space heater fires.

Now is the time to be sure you are using a safe source of heat by following these suggested safety guidelines from the NFPA:

  • Keep  anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment,      like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater.
  • Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.
  • Never use  your oven to heat your home.
  • Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water      heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and      manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a      qualified professional.
  • Remember to turn space heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Always use the type of fuel specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space      heaters.
  • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to keep sparks from flying into the      room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly.

By following these tips, you can protect your family from a needless accident.  If you have taken measures to be safe and still had a fire you believe was caused by a defective space heater, call us to discuss your situation.

One way manufacturers and retailers attempt to make inherently dangerous products less dangerous is by providing consumer warnings.  You have probably seen such warnings on many products you use regularly around your home.  However, following all of a manufacturer’s warnings and recommendations may not prevent all accidents, and may not protect a manufacturer from liability if you are injured when using a product.
